Kathy prefers realism and impressionism, stressing simplicity of subject matter and transparency of color. Her favorite subjects are close-ups of nature in its infinite variety. She enjoys depicting sunlight on her subjects, especially the drama of backlighting. The predominant mood of her work is quiet and speaks of an inner peace.
Natural curiosity and love of nature have led Gwen to her lifetime passion: painting. She states, “I have been an artist for over forty years.
When asked why she is so interested in the watercolor paper medium, Kris states “When I saw an instructor painting in watercolors and observed how fluidly the colors blended, I was hooked. I put away my oils and acrylics and never looked back.” She also notes, watercolor is a challenging medium which has taught me patience. I’ve learned that muddy colors and ‘balloons’ come from the need to keep dabbling in paint. Each painting is a little showing of my soul put on white paper.” Kris is a watercolorist who loves color. She has an interest in landscapes, architectural renderings, and portraiture. A member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society, she has had individual shows as well as being a participant in many juried shows.
“I try to communicate what attracts me to a particular subject in nature and transport the viewer to that place.”
Since 1969 she has studied with notable American artists Leslie B DeMille, Joyce Clark, Eudora Judd, and renowned watercolorist Zolton Szabo. Elaine studied privately for 2 years in Rome, Italy with Alberto Conti
